For many descendants of Croatian emigrants, their connection to Croatia begins with family stories, a surname, language, or traditions passed down through generations. But when they decide to turn that connection into something more tangible, such as Croatian citizenship or a move to Croatia, a range of practical and legal questions arise.

2026 Citizenship Tour by Expat in Croatia aims to answer these questions. From September 26 to October 10, the tour will visit five cities across the U.S. and Canada: Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Calgary, and Dallas.

At the heart of the tour are free workshops in San Francisco, Calgary, and Dallas, designed for members of the Croatian diaspora and their families. The sessions will cover who may qualify for Croatian citizenship by descent, what documentation is required, how the application process works, and what citizenship can mean for those considering life in Croatia. The workshops will also touch on tax and military obligations.

Sara Dyson, founder of Expat in Croatia, and vetted Croatian lawyers specializing in citizenship matters will lead the workshops. Participants’ questions will be a key focus. Individual circumstances can vary, and information available online may not always apply to a specific case. Last fall, Expat in Croatia held its first series of similar workshops in Toronto, Chicago, Pittsburgh, and Cleveland.

The tour will also offer the Croatian diaspora other opportunities to meet the team behind Expat in Croatia. In Los Angeles, they will be at the 75th Annual Croatian Festival & Picnic, and in Seattle, they will attend the Association of Croatian American Professionals (ACAP) Conference and CroatiaFest.

Citizenship workshops are free, but advance registration is required due to limited capacity. For more information about dates, locations, and registration, visit this page.
